Baltic relics

Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were part of the Soviet Union from the end of World War II until 1990-91. For their highly strategic position, the Baltic countries were heavily militarized by thousands of Soviet soldiers. Troops left as Cold War ended, but many of their quarters are still in place. A somber monument to the suffering of the subjugated Baltic populations and to those men and women from eastern Europe and Russia, once living in those buildings, forced to be an instrument of war and oppression.
